Touring In Town

Adelong’s history centres on farming and originated in nearby areas when pioneers moved to rich river flats bringing sheep to graze. Over the years, diary farms became prominent but in these days, the dairy farms have gone and the rural industry is geared more to cattle grazing, with sheep of lesser importance.

In the mid 1800’s, gold was discovered and the population of the town at one stage was 5,000. Tent cities grew up along he Adelong Creek and over 25 tonnes of gold were recorded as extracted from alluvial and reef mining. It is thought that at least 50% more gold was taken without being recorded.

The remnants of the Gold Days can still be seen along Adelong Creek. Within the town, there are many fine old buildings, Adelong's main street has been listed by the Heritage Council. The Adelong creek wanders through the town, an easy flat and gentle walking path takes you to the Adelong Falls and mine ruins. The Gold Mine still exists on top of Victoria Hill, it is private property though and visitors are not permitted. Many deep and dangerous shafts still exist. Many people still enjoy gold panning along the creek and there are those who claim to still manage to find a bit of colour.

For more information visit the Adelong Alive Museum

Starting beside the Swinging Bridge Café in the main street of Adelong, a gentle walking path from Adelong leads to the Adelong Falls and Gold Ruins. Or, you can drive to the lookouts above the falls area, There are easy paths and steps down from the lookouts. Signs giving directions and also historical points are located along the paths.

Many descriptions of the workings of the mine can be found.

For a full panorama of the original workings, visit the Adelong Alive Museum in the main street of town.
